The Vulnerable Pregnant Woman

I am 3 months along in my first ever pregnancy and I am realizing how vulnerable a pregnant woman can be. Here is what I've noticed:

1. Pregnancy is a time of health vulnerability: colds, nausea, digestive distress, backache, growing pains. Also, a variety of other weird things that my body does during pregnancy that I won't describe because I don't want to offend anyone.

2. Pregnancy is a time of emotional vulnerability: feeling helpless and needy, clinging to my husband for emotional support, having mood swings, fearing and expecting the worst possible, dreaming disturbing dreams.

3. Pregnancy is a time of communication vulnerability: I never know what someone will ask or say to me and how I will respond.

It's not that I hate being pregnant. There are many positive aspects to this "condition"; however, it's been a time of adjustment. It's not as if I can just hide it. Nope! It is out there for people to see. That's probably why I feel vulnerable right now. I keep reminding myself that many other women have survived the pregnancy experience, and if I find myself too emotional, I remember that when this is all over, I will have a sweet new addition to my family.

Now I need to whine to my husband for a back massage.
